Detroit Red Wings Cannot Shoot Down The Ducks, Lose In The Shootout

The Detroit Red Wings traveled into Anaheim tonight after winning a crazy 7-6 game in Dallas. With Henrik Zetterberg, Kyle Quincey, and Joakim Andersson out, the Red Wings dominated the first half of the game and then let the Ducks battle back taking the game to a shootout. The Red Wings eventually would lose like usual in the shootout.

Period 1:

More from Red Wings News

The Red Wings received the first power play of the game and looked disjointed throughout its entirety, giving up a breakaway chance that Jimmy Howard turned aside. Shortly after the failed power play, the Red Wings penalty kill hit the ice after a Danny DeKeyser tripping penalty. Midway through the pk, Justin Abdelkader beat Fowler to the puck and battled for a semi-breakaway short-handed chance that was turned aside by Gibson. The Wings received a second power play due to Etem’s high-stick on Sheahan, looked better than the first, with the Wings first unit supplying a good deal of pressure and the second unit culminating in a good chance from Stephen Weiss to Teemu Pulkkinen. With 4 minutes remaining Kronwall took a tripping penalty behind the net and which the Wings killed off handily. Pulkkinen has looked like one of the Wings’ most dangerous threats with three shots on net this period.

Period 2:

The Red Wings chaotically killed off an early Brendan Smith penalty, and Pavel Datsyuk quickly pounced following its commencement. The magic man stole the puck at the halfboards and walked into the slot shooting with the defensemen screening the goalie finding the top corner over Gibson’s glove. The Red Wings received their third power play of the game after a little bit of a sell of the hold by Smith, but nevertheless it did not take long for the magician to score again. Abby hit Pav all alone in front of the net and Pav buried the backhand making it 2 to 0. Again the Wings are back on the power play as Anaheim gets undisciplined with a high-stick. The second power play unit dominated the power play registering four shots, but were unable to put one past Gibson. The Wings fought off a flurry the rest of the period from the Ducks, but were able to come away unscathed. Through 2 periods Getzlaf, Perry, and Kesler all do not have a shot on net.

Period 3:

Two minutes into the third and Pulkkinen had a great chance to slam in a rebound from a shot/pass from Weiss. The Ducks received their fourth power play of the game after Smith high-sticked Corey Perry. The Wings were able to kill of the penalty and apply the pressure back to the Ducks, however, the Ducks were able to score on a faceoff loss in their d zone and a cycle back out the point shot which hit Howard and Cogliano was able to put the rebound home. Again the Ducks were able to create pressure on the cycle and slam home a goofy rebound, Etem makes it 2-2. Unfortunately those are two goals Howard should have had and would like back. And floodgates, Ducks make it 3 – 2 with 7 minutes remaining with Beauchemin firing one by Howard. The Red Wings wouldn’t go down without a fight though, Nyquist entered the zone and fed Sheahan who lasered one by Gibson. The Wings took their foot off the gas in the third and looked like they were conserving energy for tomorrow night in LA, now the Wings are forced to play extra time heading into OT 3-3.

Over Time:

OT was a rather uneventful affair. Neither team pushed too hard or took any risks, Wings had more shots but neither team really had a great scoring chance. Getzlaf took a late penalty, but only gave the Wings 9 seconds to try to take advantage. Heading to a shootout.

Shootout:

In the shootout Datsyuk started and rang the post on his backhand. Corey Perry came in on the side and slid a forehand past Howard. Next, Nyquist went forehand backhand past Gibson 1-1. Silverberg sniped Howard from the slot, Tatar has to score to continue, which he didn’t. Wings lose 4-3

Overall it was a disappointing game for the Wings, who have shown they can beat anyone in the league. They hit cruise when they were up 2-0 and it came back to bite them. Hopefully that means they have more than enough energy for tomorrow nights LA battle.
