The Detroit Red Wing second preseason game ended in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

How it Happened

It was the Red Wings that struck first in this high-scoring game. Darren Helm scored on the power play to give the Wings a 1-0 lead. Gustav Nyquist and Xavier Ouellet recorded the assist.

Pittsburgh would get the better start in the second period as they netted two goals in less than a minute to take a 2-1 advantage. Adam Johnson and Greg McKegg were the goalscorers for the Penguins.

Ben Street would level things soon after as he scored an unconventional goal to make it 2-2. Danny DeKeyser and Nyquist had the assists.

It continued to go back and forth throughout the period as the Penguins retook the lead thanks to Conor Sheary but Nyquist would answer to take both teams into the locker room deadlocked at 3-3. Joe Hicketts picked up the assist on Nyquist’s goal with a beautiful pass.

The third period was not at all different in terms of goal scoring. Jake Guentzal gave the Penguins the lead just 25 seconds into the period. But back came the Wing with a goal from Matt Lorito just 14 seconds later. David Booth and Axel Holmstrom had the assists.

Adam Johnson gave the Penguins the lead just before the halfway mark of the third as the home side looked to be in control of the game. However, Nyquist would score his second of the night with just two minutes remaining to force an overtime.

The overtime saw the Penguins score quickly once more. This time it was Justin Schultz who would find the back of the net as he scored just 27 seconds into the extra period.

Game Notes

  • Jimmy Howard started in net for the Wings. He would make 22 saves on 25 shots faced. Tom McCollum came into replace Howard and would finish with nine saves on 12 shots faced.
  • Both teams finished with 37 shots on goal.
  • Nyquist finished the night with four points. Hicketts had two points and was the only other Red Wings player to have more than one point.
  • The Wings went three for six on the power play which was an impressive stat. However, they picked up ten penalties themselves and yielded two goals as a result.
