In honor of the beginning of March Madness, let’s have some Detroit Red Wings March Madness themed fun! Octopus Thrower sent out a series of polls with many different Red Wings players involved. We’ve created a bracket and the basis was to vote on the player you perceived as most valuable to the team’s success. This player will fight his way through the bracket and eventually be crowned “the champion.”
Up first: Dylan Larkin vs Danny Dekeyser
You, the fans, voted and the results were unanimous:
Larkin, undoubtedly one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, takes the first round win against fellow teammate Danny Dekeyser. He has outperformed many of his teammates this season, not just Dekeyser. Larkin played his way into the top-six early in the season and didn’t look back.
He currently is second on the Detroit Red Wings with 43 points (21 goals, 22 assists), only one behind captain Henrik Zetterberg. He’s fourth in rookie scoring and could even get a nod for the Calder Trophy so it’s no surprise the fans unanimously voted him to win this match-up. He may even be the next face of the Detroit Red Wings franchise.
As for Dekeyser, the top pairing defenseman has had an interesting season and had to battle multiple injuries throughout the season. He’s hasn’t had the most productive season of his career but has reasonably contributed with 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists). His CF% in all situations has been the lowest of his career so he gets the early Octopus Thrower March Madness exit.
