The Detroit Red Wings prospects had a rough start to the 2017 National Hockey League Prospects Tournament as they fell 6-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes.

How it Happened

It was the Hurricanes that first found the back of the net as Janne Kuokkanen dispatched a one-timer past Matej Machovsky.

The Canes offensive game was very impressive at times and they showed it on their second goal of the game. Martin Necas finished off a nice passing sequence to make it 2-0.

The Red Wings would get some much needed offensive production from Dominik Shine in the second period as the forward recorded two goals to tie it up. On Shine’s second goal, Michael Rasmussen and Pat McCarron recorded the assists.

However, the Hurricanes would quickly regain their advantage with Nicolas Roy producing a beautiful breakaway goal.

Warren Foegele and Julien Gauthier would score in the third period for the Canes to put the defending champions of the tournament up 5-2. An empty-netter with less than two minutes remaining from Nick Schilkey would put the game away as it finished 6-2.

Breakdown

Despite the scoreline, the Red Wings actually outshot the Hurricanes 36 to 24.

Machovsky played the entire game for the Wings in net. The Czech goaltender made 18 saves on 23 shots faced.

Callum Booth had a big night in goal for the Canes as he stopped 34 of the 36 shots faced.

The Hurricanes were one for two on the power play and the Red Wings failed to produce on three power play opportunities.

Schilkey would finish the game as the leading scorer for both sides as the Michigan native recorded three points.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as the second day of action will see the Red Wings take on the Chicago Blackhawks at 4:00 p.m.
