Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore have been battling in and out of the courtroom for the better part of a decade because of the punch Bertuzzi gave Moore and the subsequent dog pile that landed on top of him.
No one will forge that moment on the ice because of the vicious nature and the injury it cause Moore.
Bertuzzi and Moore have been close to settling this case out of court a few times, but finally it looks as if the court case has been settled once and for all.
Bertuzzi’s lawyer Geoff Adair said settling the suit and putting the whole episode behind him comes as a huge relief to his client.
“It has been incredibly difficult and stressful for him. . . . He was pleased and very relieved that the matter has been settled,” said Adair, adding that the deal was reached after a mediation session between the two sides in early August.
Or was it…
Steve Moore’s brother Mark Moore contacted TSN claiming that no such deal had been reached between Moore and Bertuzzi.
“I got a text message from Steve last night and he’s very concerned,” Mark Moore told TSN. “He says there is no deal yet and isn’t sure what to do about all the media speculation.
Mark Moore also claimed that the Vancouver Canucks had not made a statement about it and that Bertuzzi’s lawyers were just putting pressure on Steve Moore to sign the deal so Todd Bertuzzi could sign a new contract easier with a team in the NHL.
But at least the first part of his statement is now dead as the Canuck have made an official statement about the settlement.
“Canucks Sports & Entertainment confirms that a mutually agreeable and confidential settlement of the action commenced by Steve Moore against Todd Bertuzzi and the Vancouver Canucks has been reached,” the Canucks said in a statement. “The settlement is a result of mediation sessions with former Ontario Chief Justice Warren Winkler. No further details will be disclosed and the Canucks respectfully decline requests for comment.”
With Todd Bertuzzi’s lawyers and the Vancouver Canucks saying that a settlement has been reached, I believe Todd Bertuzzi will finally be able to put this behind him.
No settlement will forgive Bertuzzi for his role in Moore’s injury or heal Moore, but it bring closer on a point in Bertuzzi’s NHL career he would most likely want to forget.
