Grand Rapids Griffins Name Pat Ferschweiler Assistant Coach

When Jim Paek left the Grand Rapids Griffins – Paek had been with the Griffins for nine seasons – to coach the South Korea National Hockey Team, it left a hole on the Griffins’ bench.

To fill the hole, the Griffins have named Pat Ferschweiler as an assistant coach to Jim Blashill.

Pat Ferchseiler spent his last four seasons in with Western Michigan University as an assistant coach and associate head coach under both Jim Blashill and Andy Murray.

From the Grand Rapids Griffins:

“I am excited to add Pat to our staff,” said Blashill. “Having worked together at WMU, I know firsthand that Pat is an outstanding hockey coach. He excels in developing players, and he has a great hockey mind and a great ability to communicate his thoughts. Most importantly, Pat relates to his players and builds relationships that extend beyond his time coaching them. He’ll be a great asset to the Griffins and Red Wings organizations.”

Pat brings professional hockey experience with him to the Griffins; he played in the ECHL, IHL, and BIHL during his professional ice hockey career.

The Grand Rapids Griffins added three forwards to their ranks, as well. Tyler Barnes, Kyle Bonis, and Mark Zengerle were all signed to one-year contracts.

Both Tyler Barnes and Mark Zenerle played for the University of Wisconson, while Kyle Bonis played for Ferris State.

Zenerle did not play professional hockey last season after his NCAA season was over, but Tyler Barnes did for San Antonio in the AHL, while Bonis played a full season in the ECHL for Florida and has had two stints in the AHL with Norfolk and Charlotte.
