With the 166th pick in the 2014 NHL Draft the Detroit Red Wings selected Julius Vahatalo from TPS in the Liiga.

Julius Vahatalo was passed over in the 2013 NHL Draft, but the Detroit Red Wings liked what they saw from him this past season and it could pay off in a big way for Detroit if he continues to progress in Finland.

He is a left winger and listed at 6’5″ and 191 pounds. He still needs to work on filling out his frame, but he is on the right track.

Vahatalo scored eighteen goals and thirty-nine points in thirty three games last season with the TPS Jr. team and finished the season playing three games with TPS.

Julius Vahatalo signed a two-year deal with TPS and will be playing for them in the Liiga next year.

Vahatalo translates to Little House, but at 6’5″, he is the biggest player the Detroit Red Wings have drafted in the 2014 NHL Draft.
