Detroit Red Wings: Preview of Future Undrafted Free-Agent Signee Tomas Nosek

Tomas Nosek

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 201 pounds

Position: LW/C

Age: 21

Shoots: Left

Stats: (With Czech professional team HC Pardubice): 52 games played, 19 goals, 25 assists, plus-17.

The Detroit Red Wings have no problems signing players who slipped through the crack and went undrafted.

Just two years ago, the Red Wings signed Damien Brunner from the Swiss league to a one-year entry-level contract and also signed Danny DeKeyser to a two-year entry-level contract

Brunner ended up singing with the New Jersey Devils this past season, but DeKeyser played well above that contract by cementing himself as a top-four defenseman for Detroit.

Sticking with their love of players named Tomas, the Red Wings will sign another undrafted free agent, this time a Czech professional by the name of Tomas Nosek.

According to’s Ansar Khan, the Red Wings have had their sights on Nosek for the past three years. The development staff was pleased with his progress, so the Red Wings will sign him to a two-year entry-level contract.

Nosek is big and has a great set of hands from the minimal clips I’ve seen on YouTube. Director of player development Jiri Fischer said Nosek is more of a playmaker than a scorer, but he’s also solid on the defensive side.

Here’s a clip of him scoring a nice goal:

Also worthy of mention, as Kukla Korner’s George Malik tweets, the Red Wings avoid a penalty by signing him before June 15.

As far as Nosek’s future with the Red Wings, the team is hoping he will be able to attend the development camp next month in Traverse City.

Malik also tweeted he thought Nosek would end up in Grand Rapids instead of making the jump right to the Red Wings like DeKeyser did.

I have no problems with Nosek joining the Griffins instead of the Red Wings. Detroit has a log jam of forwards as it is — let the kid develop in Grand Rapids before throwing him to the sharks of the NHL.

You may recall Brunner was added to the Red Wings after playing in the Swiss league. However, Brunner had a wealth of experience and came over to the United States at 26 years old. Nosek is just 21 and just played his first full season with a professional organization.

He’s got time to develop with the club and could see some time with the Red Wings depending on injuries and how the Detroit does in free agency.
