For the second straight year there are two Detroit Red Wings in the final of the TSN Play of the Year competition.
Last year, Pavel Datsyuk was matched up against his bitter rival Pavel Datsyuk and amazingly Pavel Datsyuk was able to pull off the victory over Pavel Datsyuk.
This year, Pavel Datsyuk was knocked out by T.J. Oshie in the first round, but Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist were able to go the distance for the Detroit Red Wings and make it to the finals against each other.
The Datsyuk vs. Datsyuk showdown was for fun because one of his plays were going to be named the PotY, but with Tatar facing Nyquist there could be some gloating involved to go along with the win.
Tomas Tatar’s goal against the Dallas Stars was impressive because he dodged a defender, who then took out another Dallas player trying to back-check. Tyler Seguin could not catch up with Tatar and Tatar was able to bury the puck past Kari Lehtonen
Gustav Nyquist’s goal might not be as impressive skill-wise and Tatar’s, but the fact he was able to stay on his feet with Matt Carle draped all over him, battle through a hook, and still have the presence of mind to spin around and throw the puck on net is incredible.
This will be a tough vote for Red Wings fans because it is between two Detroit Red Wings players and both plays were incredible. But I will be voting for Nyquist because even though the goal was not as impressive as Tatar’s, the ability for him to stay on his feet was more impressive than Tatar dodging a check.
