A hat trick?

‘So what? Don’t a million of those happen every season?’

Well, almost. There were 60 hat tricks in the NHL season, and including Helm’s, there were 3 by the Red Wings. What makes Darren’s so special is that it is a hint that the ecstatic, lightning-fast blondie that we first came to love in the 2007-8 season. A string of frustratingly reoccurring injuries only allowed him to play 68 games in 2011-12, and just 1 in the 2012-13 season. Things seemed to turn around for #43 this year, as he was able to play 47 games, and looked good while oftentimes taking a beating on the ice. Helm was able to use his speed, strength on the puck, and determination in a late-March game against the Maple Leafs. His hat trick lifted the Wings 4-2 over the Leafs, keeping his team in the playoff picture, and inching Toronto out of it, making the game entertaining and impactful.
