Four Detroit Red Wings saw action in day eight of the 2014 World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.
The USA was up against Kazakhstan, while Sweden battled against Slovakia.
USA vs Kazakhstan
Justin Abdelkader had 15:09 minutes of ice time, placed two shots on net, and was 58% at the face-off dot. Abdelkader played more minutes than any other forward in the first period because of the four penalties USA took in the first thirteen minutes of the game and Abdelkader is their best penalty killer.
Danny DeKeyser was moved up to USA’s top defensive pairing and paired up with Seth Jones. He had 22:52 minutes of ice time, which was good enough for second on Team USA and picked up an assist on Seth Jones’ overtime goal. This will be a big boost to DeKeyser’s confidence and the pairing of him and Jones was spectacular. DeKeyser and Jones played every minute in overtime before Jones’ goal.
The USA barely beat Kazakhstan 4-3.
Sweden vs Slovakia
Gustav Nyquist had 18:13 minutes of ice time, registered three shots on net, and picked up Sweden’s first goal of the game. Nyquist rebounded well against Slovakia and scored his goal on Sweden’s second power play opportunity. Nyquist found a soft spot and gave Axelsson a target to hit.
Tomas Tatar had 15:54 minutes of ice time, registered one shot on net, and picked up an assist. Tatar has become an important player for Slovakia throughout the tournament and played on the penalty kill and power play for Slovakia.
Sweden beat Slovakia 3-1.
