With the Detroit Red Wings out of the playoffs, The Red Wing reported that five of their players have accepted invitations to play at the Men’s World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.
Justin Abdelkader played with Team USA in the 2013 World Championship, scoring a goal and adding three assists in eight games. On the other hand, Danny DeKeyeser will be making his first international appearance with Team USA.
Abdlekader and DeKeyser were both invited and attended Team USA’s Olympic Orientation Camp, but neither were selected to represent USA in Sochi. Team USA knows what to expect from them and they will both be important players for USA in Belarus.
Jakub Kindl is making his first appearance in an international event along with DeKeyser and while he has had a rough season with Detroit, a solid performance in the Worlds could help him going into the offseason and next year.
Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist were part of their countries Olympic rosters in Sochi and will be main fixtures for their teams. Tatar and Nyquist were muffled in the playoffs by Boston and making a difference in the Worlds will be a good confidence booster for both players.
Howard declined because his wife is expecting their second son soon, while Kronwall is sticking around because his first child was recently born.
Datsyuk and Zetterberg both declined their invites due to their injuries and will instead spend the offseason recuperating.
Datsyuk’s knee has been an issue for him all season and cause him to miss thirty-seven games this season. Zetterberg missed thirty-seven regular season games and three playoff games due to a back injury and surgery to relieve the pain. Both players should be ready for training camp nest season.
