Daniel Cleary‘s knees have caused issues for him in the past and they flared up on him again this season. In order to battle his knee issues, Cleary received an injection that was supposed to alleviate the pain and allow him to return to the ice, but instead he will be out for the rest of the season and playoffs.
Stephen Weiss was supposed to return after his hernia surgery after the Olympic break, but continued to suffer from pain relating to the surgery. He went back to the specialist, while continuing to practice, but could not return to full form. Weiss will return to the ice next season, but will not see another shift this year.
Mikael Samuelsson, yes he is still on the team, is out with a shoulder injury. There is not a lot of news surrounding him or the injury, but he is probably out for the rest of the year as well.
Now to the players everyone is impatiently waiting to return.
Jonathan Ericsson broke his finger against the Toronto Maple Leafs om March 18th, but when he underwent surgery to repair his broken finger they found tendon damage, as well. Because of the tendon damage, he will not be ready to return until the second round of the playoffs. If he does not return then, it will be later rather than sooner.
Henrik Zetterberg underwent successful back surgery on Feburary 21st, which knocked him out for the remainder of the regular season. Since the Red Wings cliched a playoff berth, yesterday, there is hope that Henrik Zetterberg can return to the ice around game three or four in the First Round. Zetterberg has begun skating on his own, but has not started practicing with the team.
Petr Mrazek has been re-called, on an emergency basis, from the Grand Rapids Griffins to back up Jimmy Howard on Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes. Jonas Gustavsson suffered a minor injury against the Pittsburgh Penguins and while he will not be able to back-up Howard on Friday, he should be back charting face-offs again soon.
