Jonas Gustavsson has been incredible for the Detroit Red Wings this season, while putting up career numbers and could see more action before the season is over.
The Red Wings play the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens back-to-back on April fourth and fifth, then two days later take on the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins back-to-back on April eighth and ninth.
Jonas Gustavsson could start one or two of those back-to-back games for Detroit to give Jimmy Howard a rest and there would be no reason for fans to worry if he does.
Mike Babcock and the Red Wings trust Jonas Gustavsson in net and know that The Monster will give the team a chance to win, but sometimes he decides to steal the show.
When Jimmy Howard was out because of a hand injury in October, it was Jonas Gustavsson who stepped in and played remarkable between the pipes for Detroit. Gustavsson’s play earned him the NHL’s First Star of the week for the week of October fourteenth.
Gustavsson is putting up career numbers this season with the Red Wings; he has sixteen wins this season, a .912 save percentage, and a goals against average of 2.52. While sixteen wins only ties his second most in a season, his SV% and GAA is a NHL best for The Monster.
Injuries have been an issue for Gustavsson during his time in Detroit, but he is healthy and when healthy, he has been more than a serviceable back-up to Howard.
With how Gustavsson has played, he has earned a shot at a starting job in the NHL next season, but I am sure the Detroit Red Wings will look into bringing him back to Detroit for another season.
