Detroit Red Wings Injury Report

A few Detroit Red Wings are getting closer and closer to returning to the ice, which means that others have fallen to the injury bug that has ravaged the Red Wings’ dressing room.

Darren Helm and Jonas Gustavsson could return to the ice as soon as Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Helm has been out of the line-up since March Fourth due to concussion symptoms and Gustavsson has not been between the pipes since March Seventh due to groin issues.

Having Helm back in the line-up would be a huge boost to Daniel Alfredsson and his speed places more pressure on the opposing teams defensemen. When Helm returns, Cory Emmerton will be the odd man out.

Speaking of centers, Stephen Weiss was expected to be back on the ice for the Detroit Red Wings by now, but instead has continued to feel pain related to his hernia surgery. Because of the pain, Weiss has not been practicing and made a trip down to Philadelphia to consult with the surgeon, who preformed the surgery.

Joakim Andersson blocked a shot against the New York Rangers and has been seen in a walking boot around Joe Louis Arena. He is not expected to make a return to the line-up for at least two weeks.

Tomas Jurco was on the receiving end of a nasty cross-check from Blake Comeau. He will be out of the line-up for at least two weeks and it could be closer to four weeks because of the broken rib he sustained.

There is no change for Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Datsyuk will be out for at least another week before the doctors reevaluate him and he could be out for more time after that. Zetterberg will not return until the playoffs, if that, and is still suffering from residual back pain, which is keeping him from driving a car.

Todd Bertuzzi did not practice today and will be out of Sunday’s game against the Backhawks. The Detroit Red Wings will call up Jordin Tootoo from the Grand Rapids Griffins to take his place in the line-up.

The injuries and man games Detroit has lost has gotten so bad that Teemu Pulkkinen was not even able to get a stall in the Red Wings’ dressing room.
