Blake Comeau Suspended Two Games For Boarding Brendan Smith

Blake Comeau had a phone interview today with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety because of a boarding penalty he received after hitting Brendan Smith in the back.

Watching the hit live inside Nationwide Arena, I was surprised that Brendan Smith recovered quickly from the hit, went after Blake Comeau, and was healthy enough to sit in the box for his penalty.

Blake Comeau received two two-minute penalties on the play, one for boarding and one for diving, while Brendan Smith received a penalty for cross-checking Comeau after the play was over.

Todd Bertuzzi made sure things did not go from bad to worse because after Smith “cross-checked” Comeau, Derek MacKenzie tied to go after Brendan Smith only to be caught in the unrelenting grasp on Bertuzzi.

Brendan Smith was able to play out the rest of the game in Columbus and did not look any worse for wear, but that does not negate the fact that it was a vicious and dirty hit by Blake Comeau.

Smith has not had to undergo any concussion testing and will be ready to play in their next game, but Comeau will not have that luxury.

Blake Comeau was suspended for two games by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety because of the hit.
