Trade Deadline: Detroit Red Wings Acquire David Legwand From Nashville

With Pavel Datsyuk, Stephen Weiss, Henrik Zetterberg, and Darren Helm injured for the forseeable future, the Detroit Red Wings needed to bring in a center.

The Red Wings wanted to bring in Ryan Kesler to fill that role, but the price was too rich for Ken Holland and the front office. Holland passed on Kesler, instead he decided to bring David Legwand back home and to the Detroit Red Wings.

Legwand waived his No-Trade Clause to move to Detroit and will help the Red Wings down the middle while Datsyuk, Helm, and Weiss are out of the line-up.

Although Legwand will be a UFA after the season and that could pay directly into the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, who will probably not have room on the roster for a centerman next season.

He is a solid centerman and will help the Red Wings down the middle moving forward and in the playoffs.

The Detroit Red Wings traded Patrick Eaves, Calle Jarnkrok, and a third round pick.

That is a too much for a rental player like Legwand and it looks to be a bit of a panic buy, but it was a trade that needed to happen for Detroit and with Darren Helm and Pavel Datsyuk out of the line-up for the foreseeable future.
