Alexey Marchenko and Jeff Blashill Will represent the Grand Rapids Griffins during 2014 AHL All-Star Classic.
This will be the first AHL All-Star Game that will not be East vs West, but will instead be the AHL All-Stars versus Färjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League.
Jeff Blashill earned the honor to coach the AHL All-Stars against Färjestad BK after leading the Grand Rapids Griffins to a Calder Cup victory last season.
Alexey Marchenko receives the honor in his first season in the AHL and has tallied 18 points in 44 games with a plus/minus of 14. He even spent some time with Detroit during their West Coast Swing and in his one NHL game, he was a plus 2 in 13:21 minutes
He spent last season in the KHL with CSKA Moscow, where he was only able to put up 9 points in 44 games, which means he is continuing to grow as a player on and off the ice.
Marchenko took part in the AHL All-Star Skills Competition yesterday and fired a 92.9 MPH – just good enough to have the slowest shot of the competition. The hardest shot was fired by Magnus Nygren at 104.6 MPH.
Marchenko was denied in the shootout, as well. All in all, not a great skills competition for the young Russian
You can watch the AHL All-Stars play against Färjestad BK on AHL Live tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. EST, NHL Network at 10:00 p.m. EST, or Fox Sports Detroit at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.
