Octopus Thrower's 2014 Sochi Olympics Men's Ice Hockey Predictions

The 2014 Sochi Olympics Men’s Hockey Tournament begins Wednesday, February 12th and before it begins the crew here at Octopus Thrower decided to make their Olympic Predictions.

Peter

Gold Medal: Russia

Silver Medal: Sweden

Bronze Medal: USA

Least Valuable Player of the Tournament: Roberto Luongo. He will be replaced by Carey Price during the prelims.

MVP of the Tournament: Ilya Kovalchuk

Will a team go undefeated? Russia. They will put on a show for the home crowd.

Who are you rooting for? USA and Canada, being a duel citizen makes it my duty to root for both teams. Oh and the Jamaican bobsled team!

Christina

Gold Medal: Sweden

Silver Medal: Canada

Bronze Medal: Russia

Least Valuable Player of the Tournament: Pavel Datsyuk, who will end up not playing until the last game for Russia and will end up scoring the medal-winning goal in a shootout. Wait, are there shootouts in the Olympics? Wait, did you say least valuable player?

MVP of the Tournament: Henrik Lundqvist or the Sedin that’s going.

Will a team go undefeated? Germany! No wait…

Who are you rooting for? Sweden and Canada! And then probably USA. And then probably Russia. Everyone always yells at me when I tell them I’m rooting for Canada :(

Matt

Gold Medal: Sweden

Silver Medal: Canada

Bronze Medal: USA

Least Valuable Player of the Tournament: Max Pacioretty

MVP of the Tournament: Henrik Lundqvist

Will a team go undefeated? No

Who are you rooting for? Merica

Ari

Gold Medal: Russia

Silver Medal: Sweden

Bronze Medal: Slovakia

Least Valuable Player of the tournament: Luongo

Will a team go undefeated: No

Who are you rooting for: USA!

John E.

Gold Medal: Canada

Silver Medal: Sweden

Bronze Medal: Finland

Least Valuable Player of the Tournament: Jimmy Howard, despite his GAA of zero… (he won’t be playing, is where I’m going with this)

MVP of the Tournament: Antti Niemi. Team Finland rides him to a medal, the goalie gets hot and becomes the biggest reason the Russians are in for a VERY angry Vladimir Putin after being knocked into the consolation round by Canada or the US or Sweden or something.

Who are you rooting for? Anyone who says anything that isn’t Team USA is doing it wrong (no, I don’t care if you don’t live here Canada, you support this team or move out of this country!). They aren’t built like an offense dynamo like Canada but they are going to be really tough to play against. Team USA wins against any team in this tournament in a 7 game series, but single elimination will be a real slugfest, and a ton of fun to watch.

John C.
