As some publicity for his newly published book, Darren McCarty took to the internet to answer fans’ questions over on Reddit. His book, My Last Fight: The True Story of a Hockey Rock Star, came out December 1st and McCarty has been doing quite a few different things to promote the release.
His most recent publicity comes in the form of an “Ask Me Anything” thread on Reddit where crazy hockey fans can ask any question they want. If they’re lucky, McCarty replied and made their days–or at least gave them a hilarious answer.
So what were some of the highlights? [Note: I've bleeped the curse words because we've got to keep this G-rated. Apologies in advance...]
Let’s start with the one that had me nearly doing a spit take and laughing hysterically:
When asked which was better, punching Claude Lemieux in the face or winning the 2008 Stanley Cup to cap his comeback, McCarty replied:
Punching Lemieux face in, because without that game on March 26, 1997, none of those cups would habe happened. Also the b*****d deserved it.
Putting together the best six guys from Detroit on the ice at once? He’s got Chris Osgood in goal, Nicklas Lidstrom and Vladimir Konstantinov on defense, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, and Sergei Fedorov as forwards. I’m fairly certain that most Red Wings fans are salivating at the idea…or crying…or both.
Who’s his least favorite goalie to play against?
I played with him in Calgary, but he always owned me when I played against him and in practice. He is also one of the funniest guys i have ever played with.
Fans knows about McCarty’s struggle with substance abuse, and one person asked how he deals with it on a daily basis and if he has any advice for young people struggling with the same issues:
Ya know what, all i can say is it is a daily battle. All you can do is the best you can do each day. Don’t look to far ahead and just take care of what you need to take care of at the time.
Ever wanted to know McCarty’s favorite and least favorite players? He holds nothing back in that category:
Least Favorite : Keith Primeau, I got along with everyone, we just didnt see eye to eye.
Most Favorite was Ozzie because we grew up together, he has known me the longest. He knows what buttons to push and how to get a reaction out of me. In a funny way.
But as the father figure, we called Papa, Joey Kocur. It wasn’t untill he became part of our team in 1997, that just put us over the edge.
The DMac humor comes out in full; when asked if he’d rather get hit by a Scott Stevens-sized duck or 100 duck-sized Scott Stevens, he answers:
Great question. Ouch on both, but I’ll take a Scott Stevens sized duck so he can only hit me once. Just ask Eric Lindross.
What did it feel like to score the Cup-winning goal in 1997 and when did it sink in?
I don’t know if it has sunken in yet.
My reaction after the goal, with a couple pirouettes in the corner, then seeing Yzerman’s eyes as big as saucers and said, “What Just happened?” I said I don’t know. Then he said, “Who f**king cares!”
And a little feel-good answer when asked what his 2008 comeback meant to him:
It means the story of my life; Never give up, never surrender and shows people to always follow your dreams in spite of hard times.
If you want to see all of his responses, the thread is over here. My Last Fight is available pretty much anywhere. Give it a read! Let us know what you think.
