When Jimmy Howard left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, he joined the long list of injured Detroit Red Wings.
Adding Howard to the list of; Pavel Datsyuk (lower-body), Daniel Alfredsson (back spasms), Stephen Weiss (hernia), Jonathan Ericsson (ribs), Cory Emmerton (hand), Joakim Andersson (lower-body), and Johan Franzen (concussion) makes it that much worse for a Detroit team that is trying to stay in the playoff picture before the Sochi Winter Olympic break.
Jimmy Howard and Daniel Alfredsson were added to the Short-Term Injured Reserve list today, which means that they will not be eligible to return to the ice for seven days, and Jonathan Ericsson and Jonas Gustavsson were taken off STIR and could be ready to return.
The good new for the Wings and their fans is that Darren Helm returned to the line-up against the Blues and it looked like he had not skipped a beat. He was very dangerous on the ice and despite the fact he was only credited with 2 shots on net, I counted at least six shots that either missed the mark or were blocked before they made it to Halak.
Jonas Gustavsson is set to start tomorrow’s game against the Blackhawks and hopefully he will continue in the same form as he was before the injury because the Wings will need it.
In other news, Pavel Datsyuk and Daniel Alfredsson continue to practice with the team, but neither player is ready to return to the ice yet.
Another player who could return to the line-up against the Chicago Blackhawks, Jonathan Ericsson. Ericsson will be a big boost the a defense that has not been clicking well as of late for Detroit.
Niklas Kronwall, Kyle Quincey, Henrik Zetterberg, Patrick Eaves, and Daniel Cleary did not practice today; which could mean that Mike Babcock gave them the day off or that they could have other problems that are not known ye. Let us hope it is not the latter option.
