Justin Abdelkader is going through concussion protocol, which means he will not play in tonight’s game and could be out indefinitely.
In Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins both Justin Abdelkader and Deryk Engelland were skating for a loose puck, but Abdelkader beat him to the puck. Once Engelland understood that Abdelkader beat him; he changed his momentum, looked straight at Abdelkader, and put his shoulder directly into Abdelkaders head.
The hit does not look very dirty from the first angle, but from the angle the referee had and the second camera angle it shows just how dirty the hit is.
It was dirty enough for him to receive a 5 minute major and match penalty and has caught the attention of Brendan Shanahan. Engelland will have an in-person hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Wednesday and could be suspended for over 5 games for the hit on Abdelkader.
You think that the Penguins would have learned from the Neal suspension that players should not target the heads of their opponents, but I guess Engelland did not receive the memo.
Engelland is not considered a repeat offender, but he was suspended for three games in 2011 for a head shot.
These are the hits the NHL wants out of the game and after Neal received 5 games, I am guessing Engelland will receive more than that because Abdelkader did not return to the game and could be out for a long period of time.
Justin Abdelkader joins a long line of injured Wings that will hopefully return to the ice soon.
