The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Petr Mrazek from the Grand Rapids Griffins today to possibly back-up Jonas Gutavsson on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
According to Ansar Khan, Howard received a bump in practice and left the ice early.
The Wings have recalled goalie Petr Mrazek from Grand Rapids. Checking, but it’s probably because Howard was ‘bumped’ in practice today.

This is more of a precautionary call-up because of the distance between Detroit and Tampa Bay. If the Red Wings were at home they would most likely wait until tomorrow in order to properly access Jimmy Howard‘s injury.
Howard possibly being out does not disrupt the Wings goaltending situation because Jonas Gustavsson was already slated for the start in Tampa. If Howard cannot go tomorrow it will be up to Petr Mrazek to chart the face-offs because he will not see the ice unless something goes horribly wrong for Detroit.
With the AHL All-Stars… I mean the Grand Rapids Griffins, Petr Mrazek is 10-2-1 with a 2.09 GAA and a .927 SV%.
In Detroit, Mrazek backed up Jimmy Howard while Jonas Gustavsson was out of the line-up and received one start in that period. Mrazek made all 14 saves in that start and earned himself his first NHL shutout.
Unless Jimmy Howard is out for an extended period, which does not look to be the case, Mrazek will only be backing up Gustavsson for one game and head back to Grand Rapids when the Wings return from their road trip.
In other news, Stephen Weiss is out again with a groin injury. He has been playing with the injury for a while and it has taken its toll to the point where he cannot go anymore. Mikael Samuelsson will return to the line-up in Tampa Bay and Johan Franzen will drop down to the second line center position.
Henrik Zetterberg has been placed on LTIR to make cap space for Petr Mrazek and it will give the Red Wings a lot of cap flexibility.
