Weiss vs Filppula | Detroit Red Wings vs Tampa Bay Lightning

The Detroit Red Wings take on Steve Yzerman and the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at 7:00 p.m. EST.

After dropping their fourth straight game at home on Thursday, the Red Wings and Mike Babcock will be looking for something else out of their team tonight. They played a solid game against the Star, but inopportune penalties and a lack of defensive responsibilities hurt them. The Wings need to start helping their goaltender and not handcuff him.

Valtteri Filppula makes his triumphant return to the city that all but kick him out. He is third on the team with points this season, but the most dangerous players are Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis. In net, both goaltenders have struggled to play well, but the Lightning have been able to score enough goals to offset the struggles; something the Wing have not been able to do.

Projected Line-up

Henrik Zetterberg – Pavel Datsyuk – Todd Bertuzzi

Tomas Tatar – Darren Helm – Daniel Alfredsson

Justin Abdelkader – Joakim Andersson – Drew Miller

Daniel Cleary – Luke Glendening – Patrick Eaves

Danny DeKeyser – Niklas Kronwall

Adam Almquist – Kyle Quincey

Jakub Kindl – Brian Lashoff

Jimmy Howard

Valtteri Filppula returns to Detroit tonight and all of the Ken Holland haters will be out in full force claiming that he made the wrong move by not signing Filppula to a contract, despite the fact that he has only surpassed 40 points once.

On the other side of the fence will be the Weiss supporters, like us, asking to give him more time and not put too much pressure on the new acquisition. Tonight, we will see who is right and who is dead.

The defense was much better against the Stars than they were against the Jet, but they still continue to turn the puck over too often.

Adam Almquist had a much better game after being paired up with Kyle Quincey on defense. The veteran defenseman seem to calm Almquist down and let him play his natural game.

Mikael Samuelsson played well in his return to the line-up, but I am not convinced that he is the answer to the Red Wings power play woes.

Jonas Gustavsson returned for injury on Thursday and will continue to back-up Howard until he get another shot between the pipes.

Johan Franzen will miss his third game in a row due to illness/injury; he continues to practice with the team and they have set his return date for Tuesday.

Prediction: The Red Wings need to do something different tonight and they will. 5-2 Red Wing victory.

UPDATE: Stephen Weiss is out with a groin injury for tonight’s game.
