Cody McLeod Suspended Five Games For Boarding Niklas Kronwall

Brendan Shanahan and the Department of Player Safety decided to suspend Cody McLeod for five games for boarding Niklas Kronwall.

From the NHL

The incident occurred at 2:13 of the first period. McLeod was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, McLeod will forfeit $29,487.20. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Shanahan does a good job explaining his reasoning behind this and the fact Kronwall put himself in a more vulnerable position factored in, but he saw what the rest of us saw as well. McLeod was staring at Kronwall’s numbers the entire time, did nothing to slow down and minimize the impact, and moved to check Kronwall after he saw Kronwall turn back against the grain.

I am ok with the five game suspension because it is exactly what Maxim Lapierre received for boarding Dan Boyle on a similar looking incident.

How do you feel about the suspension?
