After the home-opener the Detroit Red Wings went on their first road trip of the season and played in back to back games against the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins.
The Red Wings were able to come back late in the game against the Hurricanes, but had no such luck against the Bruins, who handed the Wings their first loss of the season.
The biggest play of the Carolina game was the mad scramble in front, which led to Henrik Zetterberg’s first goal of the season. After pulling Jimmy Howard, the Red Wings decided to send 5 forwards onto the ice along with Niklas Kronwall and it work to perfection.
It is not often that pulling your goalie works like it did here, but the Red Wings swarmed and kept the pressure on Ward until he broke.
In overtime, Steohen Weiss ended the game with a rebound goal, which was all thanks to Johan Franzen taking the puck to the net.
Weiss crashed the net and the puck was sitting there for him to stuff into the net.
In Boston, Detroit made a lot of mistakes on the ice, mostly on the penalty kill, like this one. Johan Franzen is on the penalty kill and instead of staying in position, he chases the puck and leaves Krug all alone to step up and blast the puck past Howard.
It was a terrible move by Franzen and it put the defenseman in no mans land because he was stuck between trying to block the shot and pushing Chara out from in front of the net.
The full highlights for yesterday’s game against the Boston Bruins is here. You will see a lot of great saves by Howard, Zetterberg’s lone goal, which was a great followup of Abdelkader’s shot, and four goals by the Bruins.
