Detroit Red Wings Roster Update

Today is the day in which the Red Wings needed to clear their roster and bring the number down to 23.

While trying to get under the roster limit the Red Wings decided to waive Cory Emmerton yesterday and at noon today he cleared waivers. He has be sent down to Grand Rapids, but can be recalled at anytime and once players are put on LTIR he could see himself back in a Winged Wheel by Wednesday’s season opener.

The other two moves the Red Wings made were not very surprising as both players were able to be sent down to Grand Rapids without having to clear waivers.

A lot of people may be upset that Gustav Nyquist has been sent down, but he will not be in the AHL for long. He is in the same boat as Emmerton, once the Red Wings clear some roster and cap space Nyquist will be back in the NHL.

As for Petr Mrazek, the Red Wings would prefer him to get as many games in as possible and that will not happen if he is sitting behind Jimmy Howard. Instead, Jared Coreau will begin the season as the back-up to Howard, while Gustavsson recovers from injury.

The Red Wings still have a few moves to make before the day is over and most of the moves will hinge on whether or not Gustavsson, Tootoo, and Eaves will be eligible for Long Term Injured Reserve.

If they are not eligible, the Red Wings can still bring in emergency call-ups who will not count against the Salary Cap, but can only be in Detroit for a short period of time.

UPDATE:

Jared Coreau will be sent down to Grand Rapids in a couple days and Petr Mrazek will be brought back up to back-up Jimmy Howard.
