Art Regner from FoxSportsDetroit is reporting that the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators are talking about a possible trade which would involve former Predator and current Red Wing, Jordin Tootoo,
An NHL source has confirmed to FoxSportsDetroit.com that the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators have discussed sending Jordin Tootoo back to Music City.
Tootoo was drafted by Nashville in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and spent the first eight years of his NHL career with the Predators. The Wings signed him as an unrestricted free agent to a three-year, $5.7 million contract on July 1, 2012.
Always a fan favorite, Tootoo is an abrasive player who’s more than willing to drop the gloves. In 42 games with Detroit last season, the 5-foot-9, 199-pound winger had three goals, five assists and 78 penalty minutes.
Tootoo endeared himself to Red Wing fans by stepping up and fighting for his teammates on the ice, but the Wings have 16 forwards on the roster currently and need to chip away at that number.
Unlike Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson, Jordin Tootoo does not have a No Trade Clause and is an expendable player for the Red Wings. The Red Wings have no room for Tootoo because that have a large amount of 3rd and 4th line players under contract and Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, and Joakim Andersson will all be promoted up to the big club next season.
The Red Wings will lose their only enforcer, but Tootoo does not bring anything other than fore-checking and fighting to the table for the Wings. Mike Babcock expects his 3rd and 4th line players to not only give the team energy, but kill penalties as well and Tootoo is not trusted on the penalty kill.
Tootoo does not bring enough to the table to warrant a spot on the Red Wings next season and if they are able to unload his contract onto Nashville for picks or a prospect it would be a huge win for the Red Wings.
How would you feel if the Red Wings traded Jordin Tootoo back to the Predators?
