Why The Detroit Red Wings Need Danny Briere

Free Agency opens on July 5th and the Detroit Red Wings will be looking to upgrade the team by bringing in a free agent or two. Here we take a look at players who could help the Wings moving forward.

Danny Briere

HEIGHT: 5′ 10″
WEIGHT: 190
SHOOTS: RIGHT
AGE: 35
CAP HIT: $6,500,000
STATS: 16 points (6 goals, 10 assist) / 34 games played

With the possibility of Valtteri Filppula leaving the Red Wings via free agency they could be looking for a player to take over the second line center duties and Danny Briere would be a decent option.

Why should the Red Wings sign Danny Briere?

The second line center position is a big need in Detroit and Briere would fit the bill.

Briere can produce on the ice, last season he had ~.5 points per game, the year before that ~.7 points per game, and the year before that ~.9 points per game.

We are seeing a decline in production from Briere, but he could be a serviceable stopgap for the Wings at the second line center position.

Why shouldn’t the Red Wings sign Danny Briere?

Briere is in the twilight of his career and might only be salvageable at the second line center position for one more season.

If Stephen Weiss does not help the Wings in the size department, Briere takes them back a step.

Despite his age, he might not be willing to take the pay cut the Red Wings would more than likely offer him.

Detroit does not need another 35+ contract on their books.

The question is, do we think he should be brought in?

Briere should only be brought in as a last resort option. I would prefer Briere not join the Wings, but if it was for a decent number, under $3 million, I would not hate it.
