Is Valtteri Filppula Already Gone?

The Detroit Red Wings would like to bring back Valtteri Filppula, but is he already on his way to another team?

Rumors are that Filppula wants a long-term deal within the $5 million dollar range, which could be out of Detroit’s price range for him. Especially after this past season, in which he was only able to produce 17 points in 41 games.

Instead of losing him in free agency with no return, they could look to trade his rights during the draft.

According to Art Regner at Fox Sports Detroit:

As far as the Wings and Val Filppula, they’re still talking. If they can’t strike a deal with Filppula before the draft, the wings will try to trade his rights. They would then use Filppula’s money to sign a second-line center.

There are a couple of second line centers who will be on the market this summer; Stephen Weiss, Danny Briere, Tim Connolly, Derek Roy, and Mike Ribeiro. The Wings could look to promote from within as well, I could see Joakim Andersson or Calle Jarnkrok in that role if they are able to improve during the offseason, but they are most likely a few seasons away of making that jump.

There is not much the Red Wings would be able to get for Filppula’s rights, regardless if it was a sign and trade deal or just a regular trade because he would be in charge. A team would not give up a lot for a player unless it was guaranteed that he would sign with them after they traded for him and Fillpula could rule out teams just by saying that he wouldn’t sign.

According toe Brad Galli and Ansar Khan, contract talks have stall with Filppula.

With contracts stalled and the Draft coming up, Filppula’s time in Detroit could be over.

It will be a sad day to see him go because of all the potential he possessed, but he was never able to put it all together and is not worth a $5 million dollar contract.

Valtteri Filppula could be the best center on the market if the Wings cannot re-sign him, but there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

Should the Red Wings trade Valtteri Filppula?
