Over the next few weeks here at Octopus Thrower we will be profiling a number of draft eligible players who may be dawning a Detroit Red Wings jersey and cap at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft on June 30th.

Josh Morrissey is ranked 27th among North American players by Central Scouting and 21st by International Scouting Service.

In two years with Prince Albert, Josh Morrissey has become a solid offensive defenseman, but it has not come as the expense of his defensive game.

Some players become focused on producing offense that their defensive game suffers, but not Morrissey.

Morrissey plays the top minutes for Prince Albert and Canada’s World Junior team because of his skill in the offensive and defensive zone.

Josh Morrissey’s breakdown:

Assets:

  1. Skating - Morrissey is more than willing to join the rush and can skate the puck into the zone.
  1. Production - One of the most consistent defensemen in the WHL the past two seasons.
  1. Defense - One of the best shutdown defenseman in the draft and plays top minutes in the WHL and an International competition.

Flaws:

  1. Size - At 6’0″ 182lbs, he needs to bulk up a bit more before he come to the NHL.
  1. Physicality - Can be pushed of the puck and out muscled.
  1. Shot – Does not posses a powerful slap shot, but keeps pucks low for tips.

NHL Comparable(s):

  1. Alex Edler - Combines the offensive and defensive sides of the game to become a complete player.
  1. Joni Pitkinen - An offensive defenseman that does not posses an overly powerful shot, but produces points.
  1. Carlo Colaiacovo - Defensively responsible player with a quick first pass to outlet the play.

Why He Interests The Red Wings:

The Red Wings do not have a huge need on defense right now and the depth in the system is pretty solid, but I do not know how they could pass up a product as good as he is.

Career Potential:

A top 4 defenseman, that will not only be able to consistently create points on offense, but also shutdown opposing players on defense.
