To Re-Sign Or Not Re-Sign: Ian White

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at Detroit Red Wings’ player who are becoming Unrestricted Free Agents this summer and deciding whether or not the Red Wings would re-sign them or cut them loose.

Ian White

HEIGHT: 5′ 10″
WEIGHT: 191
SHOOTS: RIGHT
AGE: 29
CAP HIT: $2,875,000
STATS: 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) 25 games played

Ian White came into Detroit and was immediately paired up with Nicklas Lidstrom to create a solid top defensive pairing.

This year was a different story for White though; he struggled defensively, offensively and positionally. All of that led to him being put in Mike Babcock’s doghouse and rookies Danny DeKeyser and Brian Lashoff starting over him.

White fell out of favor with fans as well, during the lockout he called Gary Bettman an idiot, which although most people might agree is not a smart idea, and during the season he continued to open his mouth and say not so smart things.

Next season the Red Wings are stocked on defense with six defensemen under contract, along with Jakub Kindl and Brendan Smith who are both RFAs and will be brought back giving the Wings eight defensemen heading into next season.

While, White can be an efficient defenseman on the blue line he fell out of favor with Babcock, his play severely declined, and there is simply no room for him in the defensive rotation.

This is not to say White is a useless player though; he was the only right hand shot on the blue line for the Red Wings, he posseses a great shot which he can get through traffic, and can quarterback the power play. As of now though, it looks like he will be the odd man out on defense.

Ansar Khan talked to Ian White and he had this to say:

“It’s real disappointing to have it end this way,” White said. “When I came here, and after last year, I thought I might be able to have a long future here.”

It seems that even Ian White thinks he will not be back in a Wings sweater next season and it looks the same to us.

Good-bye Ian White and safe travels.

Should Ian White be re-signed?
