The Detroit Red Wings’ Compliance Buyout: Jordin Tootoo

During the offseason the Detroit Red Wings will be able to use a compliance buyout on two players. Over the next couple weeks we will take a look at which players could end up being bought out during the offseason for the Red Wings.

Jordin Tootoo

HEIGHT: 5′ 9″
AGE: 30
CAP HIT: $1,900,000 / 2 years left
STATS: 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) / 78 PIM / 42 games played

Jordin Tootoo is a prime candidate for a compliance buyout because he is not a core member of the Red Wings and when playoff time rolled around he only saw action in the first game of the first round. After that first game he became a healthy scratch and spent the next 13 game watching from the press box.

Mike Babcock liked the energy and physicality Tootoo brought to the table for the Red Wings during the Regular Season, but Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, and Cory Emmerton do the same thing. Babcock said that Tootoo receives more time at the beginning of the season when it is silly rather than at the end of the season or during the playoffs because of the possibly of penalties.

The other big knock on him is that he does not kill penalties or play on the power play, something that you need from bottom six players. He is the only pure fighter on the Red Wing roster though, but if Tootoo is bought out the Red Wings would be able to bring a different player that cannot only fight, but play in all facets of the game.

Myself, I like Jordin Tootoo. He made a difference in many games, the Red wings sometimes have a hard time getting to that next gear when it’s needed and Tootoo and like Datsyuk, Tootoo can provide that inspiration, albeit in an entirely different way. One big hit or a fight from Tootoo has lit a fire under the asses of the rest of the team. He does take some stupid penalties but he also makes many players think twice about hitting anyone on our top two lines or taking it to Howard like Chicago did so often in our last series. I’ve missed that aspect since Darren McCarty. He proved that with some good coaching a guy can be more that “Just a fighter” I say give him a chance in a season with a full training camp.

Jordin Tootoo does not have the same talent level that Darren McCarty possessed and he will never be what McCarty was.
I don’t think he makes players think twice either. The reason people thought twice about hitting Yzerman or Gretzky is because those big tough guys were on their line, which does not work in the NHL any more.
