Preview: A Playoffs Or Bust Night For The Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are in Dallas to take on the Stars for the last game of the regular season, at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

The Red Wings have been on a roll recently, having won their last three games, but another challenge looms again tonight. The Wings will look for more consistent play out of their defense, which continues to give up give scoring chances and the offense needs to keep rolling tonight.

Dallas is coming off a loss to Columbus, which if they had won would have guaranteed a playoff spot for Detroit. All Red Wing fans despise Dallas right now and we hope the players feel the same. Dallas is coming off of 4 loses in a row, but they are still a tough team to beat.

Projected Line-up

Henrik Zetterberg – Pavel Datsyuk – Justin Abdelkader

Johan Franzen – Valtteri Filppula – Daniel Cleary

Gustav Nyquist – Joakim Andersson  Damien Brunner

Patrick Eaves – Cory Emmerton – Jordin Tootoo

Niklas Kronwall – Jonathan Ericsson

Brendan Smith  Kyle Quincey

Jakub Kindl  Danny DeKeyser

Jimmy Howard

Johan Franzen is in playoff form, he has 8 goals in 8 games and showing why he was chosen over Hossa.

Despite some mistakes by Jakub Kindl and Brendan Smith last game I think the Wings have found their best defensive pairings.

What more can anyone say about the Wings offense? Everyone is on the ball and I don’t want anyone to sit, sorry Todd Bertuzzi.

Playoff Scenarios

If Detroit beats Dallas, the Red Wings clinch a playoff berth and 7th place.

If Detroit loses in overtime to Dallas, the Wings still clinch a playoff berth, but could lose out on 7th place if Mnnesota wins.

If Detroit loses in regulation to Dallas, the Wings would need either Minnesota or Columbus to lose in order to make the playoffs.

Prediction: The Red Wings have been playing very well the past three games and there is no reason that would change now. Red Wings victory 3-1.

    Franzen over Hossa???
    Playoff form?
Last year in playoffs had a +- of -1 and 0 Assists and 1 goal.

Hossa is a better player overall +- of +20 vs Franzen at +13.
Few can ever knock Hossa off the puck.
Was in 3 Cup Playoffs in a row (Penguins, Red Wings, Blackhawks)
Sounds like sour grapes that he went to Blackhawks instead of
    stay with Red Wings.
Why else would Wings take him after they saw how he played
    with Penguins?

Franzen has 8 goals in 8 games and when Franzen is on he can certainly outplay Hossa. The difference between the two is consistency which Hossa has and Franzen does not.

As for playoffs, the last two years he was injured. If you look before that you see 18 points in 16 games, 23 points in 23 games and 18 points in 12 games. That is playoff Franzen.

Hossa was also a main reason the Wings lost in 08-09 with only 1 assist in the Finals.

Hossa is a very good play not denying that, but when Franzen is in playoff form I wouldn’t take Hossa over him.
