Getting To Know The Red Wings New Conference: Montreal Canadiens

When the Red Wings move to the Eastern Conference next season they will find themselves in familiar, but unfamiliar territory. Some fans remember when the Wings would play against Toronto, Montreal, and Boston in the original six days, but those days are no more. The new Red Wings and their fans will have to adjust to the new conference and teams.

To help the transition get started I asked Bryer MacPherson, the editor at A Winning Habit to answer a few questions and he was gracious enough to help us out.

What is something Red Wing fans need to know about the Canadiens?

BM: The way the Habs are playing this here, which was completely unexpected of them, is amazing. Nobody ever thought they would go from 27th place to the top 5 in just one season. With a great GM in Bergevin and some big moves expected in the near future, look out Wings, because the Habs will be on top of the NHL in the next couple years!

Me: The Habs are certainly on a roll as of late and will be a tough team to play next season.

Which player from the Canadiens should Red Wing fans fear?

BM: I’d have to say Michael Ryder for sure. Since being acquired by MTL from Dallas, he has done nothing but good for the habs. He is a great player and a great fit in MTL.

Me: I hope your GM apologised to Joe Nieuwendyk after making that trade.

Which Red Wing player are Montreal fans most afraid of playing against next season?

BM: Definitely Pavel Datsyuk. I mean who wouldn’t fear Pavel and his Datsyukian dekes, and not to mention numerous highlight reel goals right? Also because he is just an incredible player and I like him, but not against the Habs!

Me: With a wicked wrister and moves no one else can match, everyone should be worried about Datsyuk.

P.K. Subban is leading the Candiens in points this season, is that a testament to how good he is or how bad the forwards are?

BM: It just shows how good Subban is. Watch out Red Wings!

Me: A lot of Red Wing fans wanted Holland to sign him to an offer sheet because of how good he is and he is proving his worth this season.

Are Montreal fans still bitter about Subban not signing before the season started?

BM: Not really, we we’re just happy to see him stay in Montreal and not just make it about the money.

Me: I looks like there will be a Lidstrom Trophy, I mean Norris Trophy in his house very soon as well.

What will Red Wing and Canadien fans agree on about our new division?

BM: It’s going to be great having a few original 6 teams in the division and should bring some good competition!

Me: Four out of the Six original teams will be in the conference, might as well call it the Original Conference.

A big thank you to Bryer MacPherson and A Winning Habit for answering these questions and helping us transition to life in the Eastern Conference. Be sure to check them out. We will see you next season Montreal and we will be ready.
