No Deal For Detroit Red Wings At Trade Deadline

The Detroit Red Wings were very interested in bringing in a top six forward and/or a top four defenseman, but prices were high, too high for Ken Holland an MIke Ilitch.

There will be angry fans who are upset the Ken Holland once again did not make a trade at the deadline, but it was the best move the Red Wings could have made today.

Jason Pominville, who would have been a good addition, was sent to the Minnesota Wild along with a 4th in 2014 for Johan Larsson, Matt in 2013, and a 2nd in 2014.

The other big name Marian Gaborik was sent to Columbus Blue Jackets for Derick Brassard, Derek Dorsett, John Moore, and 6th in 2013. This is a huge trade and Columbus gave up a lot of assets to bring in Gaborik who is not having a great season at the moment.

I am not surprised the Red Wings did not trade for a player because the prices were so high today, but I am surprised the Wings didn’t off load a player at the deadline.

Brian Lashoff is on his way back to Detroit since there is no 23 man roster limit anymore and joins a very crowded line-up. Once Kyle Quincey is healthy from his injury the Wings will have nine defenseman fighting for six spots. While that is not necessarily a bad option for the Wings because depth is always good, they had an opportunity to bring in another prospect or pick for the draft.

Up front the Wings are looking forward to Todd Bertuzzi and Darren Helm returning to the line-up. Bertuzzi is getting closer to returning and has been skating with the team regularly, he is hoping to return next week. Darren Helm on the other hand is still further away from returning, but has been allowed to up his rehab.

The Red Wings can now turn their attention towards the rest of the season and playoffs.

UPDATE: Since the Brian Lashoff call up no other Griffin can be called up to Detroit unless on an emergency basis.
