Preview: Where Instigator Penalties Are Optional For The Ducks Against The Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings take on the Anaheim Ducks for the second time in three day at 8:00 p.m. EDT.

Detroit started the last game against the Ducks a bit rough on defense and Teemu Selanne took advantage of it by putting a shot past Howard, but after that goal the defense clamped down and suffocated the Ducks’ offense. While the defense was hold the Ducks’ offense, the Red Wing forwards took it to the Viktor Fasth and Justin Abdelkader ended up chasing him from the net.

The Ducks will be looking for revenge tonight, on the stat sheet and on the ice. I would not be surprised if they go after Brendan Smith or another Wing player early to try and set the tone for the game, but the Wings need to stay disciplined and not let the Ducks control the pace of play. If they can do that and keep their energy from the last game then the Wings have a very good chance of winning big again.

Projected Line-up

Valtteri Filppula – Henrik Zetterberg – Drew Miller

Johan Franzen – Pavel Datsyuk – Justin Abdelkader

Daniel Cleary – Joakim Andersson  Damien Brunner

Gustav Nyquist – Cory Emmerton – Patrick Eaves

Niklas Kronwall – Jonathan Ericsson

Brendan Smith  Brian Lashoff

Jakub Kindl  Ian White

Jimmy Howard

Drew Miller had a stellar game on Zetterberg’s wing, he looked strong with and without the puck.

Despite being demoted to the Wings 4th line Gustav Nyquist had a strong game and made the most of his opportunities.

Goaltending does not seem to be a problem when Jimmy Howard is in net for the Wings, but he needs to have another great game tonight.

Jordin Tootoo might replace Patrick Eaves on the fourth line to give the Red Wings a fighter against the Ducks.

Random Fact – Datsyuk recorded his 250th goal and 500th assist against the Anaheim Ducks on March 22nd. In the same game Abdelkader recorded his first hat-trick.

Prediction: After getting beat on the scoreboard and physically by Smith, Ericsson, and Lashoff the Ducks will come out swing against the Wings. Duck win 3-2 in OT.

UPDATE: Brunner out and Tootoo is in.
