The Detroit Red Wings start their Western Canada road trip in Calgary versus the Flames at 9:30 p.m. EDT.
The Red Wings are coming off of a bad weekend after dropping two games in a row to the lowly Blue Jackets, but today is a new day. The Wings need to get their offense going and the addition of Gustav Nyquist coupled with the return of Valtteri Filppula could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
Calgary is coming off three loses in which they have been beaten soundly by their opponent are hungry for a victory. Even on losing streaks the Flames are a dangerous team, as the Red Wings found out earlier this season. Jiri Hudler has cooled off since his fast start, but him, Jarome Iginla, and Alex Tanguay are still very dangerous.
Tomas Tatar has been assigned to Grand Rapids and Gustav Nyquist has been brought up. Tatar played very well in his time with the Wings, but Nyquist provides the top 6 scoring potential that Tatar does not.
With the return of Valtteri Filppula the Wings top 6 forwards look a lot better than they did over the weekend. He will rejoin Zetterberg’s line which saw him produce record numbers last season.
Prediction: Red Wings newcomers Filppula and Nyquist reinvigorate the team. Red Wings victory 3-2.
If Howard cannot play Gustavsson will receive the start in net and a local goalie could receive a call to back him up for the game.
White and Tootoo have the day off, Lashoff and Eaves will be starting in their place.
