Grand Rapids Griffins Petr Mrazek and Tomas Tatar have been called up to play for the Detroit Red Wings.
Tomas Tatar has been tearing up the AHL along with forward Gustav Nyquist. In 44 games Tatar has 39 points, 19 goals and 20 assists, and leads the team in shots on net. The reason the Red Wings recalled Tatar and not Nyquist is because Tatar is a better fit for 3rd line duties. Tatar, while only being 5-10, plays the game very physically and can accomplish more than Nyquist in limited ice time.
Tatar is expected to be in the line-up on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.
Goaltender Thomas McCollum has been backing up Jimmy Howard since Jonas Gustavsson was sidelined with a groin injury. McCollum has been sent back down to Grand Rapids and rising star Petr Mrazek will replace him on the Red Wings roster. If neither Gustavsson nor Joey MacDonald return from injury expect Mrazek to make his first NHL start this week.
Mrazek leads the Griffins in GAA (2.26), SV% (.916), and wins with 16. I was fortunate enough to watch him at the Detroit Red Wings Development Camp in Traverse City and you can tell that Mrazek is special. He gave up plenty of goals in the scrimmage, but he stayed calm and didn’t let it get to him. He won’t need the same seasoning that Ken Holland likes to his goalies to have and Mrazek could receive his chance to prove it soon.
