Detroit Red Wings Injury Report

Another Detroit Red Wings hockey game and another Red Wings player heading to the trainer’s room. Curse you hockey gods! Was losing Nicklas Lidstrom not enough for you?

Brendan Smith left the Blue Jackets game in the first period after being hit into the boards by forward Derek MacKenzie. Smith is expected to be out for at least a week with a shoulder injury and joins the long list of injured Red Wings.

This is a big blow to the Red Wings defensive corps as Smith led the Red Wings in ice time against the Blues the on Friday. While he only has one point in this shortened season for the Wings, he is a plus 4 and has been positionally sound on defence. When called upon to play special teams he has done so admirably. The Red Wings are losing a key defensive player and either Ian White or  another rookie in Brian Lashoff will have to replace him on the blue line.

Smith joins Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder), Jonas Gustavsson (groin), Mikael Samuelsson (groin), Darren Helm (back), Jan Mursak (shoulder) Joey MacDonald (back), and Ian White (laceration) on the injured Wings list.

The good news is Ian White is planning to play on Tuesday against the Flames, but if he is not able to play the Red Wings will go with Brian Lashoff who has done very well on defence.

Carlo Colaiacovo has started skating for the first time since his injury, but he is not close to coming back yet. Darren Helm has been skating as well and is about a week away from returning to the line-up.

Neither Samuelsson nor Jan Mursak have been skating and won’t be returning any time soon.

The Red Wings desperately need either Jonas Gustavsson or Joey MacDonald to back- up Jimmy Howard and give him breaks periodically. Against the Blue Jackets he looked tired and gave up a few bad goals that he normally would not. Howard is more than willing to play all 48 games this season, but having a reliable goalie to play a few games for him will keep him fresh.
