This table is a testament to the work Ken Holland and the Red Wings organization. Half of the players currently on the roster were drafted by the Red Wings. Even though Kyle Quincey was acquired through a trade last season; he was also drafted by Holland and the Wings, although right now they probably want to keep that under wraps.

The Red Wings tend to draft their defencemen early in the draft and offencemen in the later rounds. This decision has workout well in bringing talented defenders like Smith and Kronwall onto the team, while searching the later rounds for quality offensive players like Franzen and Filppula.

In the last two drafts though the Red Wings have reversed this strategy by taking mainly forwards in the first few rounds and focusing on defence in the later rounds. This choice has brought in a plethora of offensive prospect for the Red Wings, but at the cost of defensive depth.

The rest of the roster is mostly veteran free agents brought in at a discount to play for the Wings.

Now you know how your Detroit Red Wings players became Red Wings.
