Detroit Red Wings Injury Report

Another Red Wings game and more players heading to the trainer’s room.

New defensive acquisition Carlo Colaiacovo injured his shoulder in the 3rd period of the Blue Jackets game after being hit into the boards. Mike Babcock does not expect Colaiacovo to be back in the line-up any time soon. This ruins my prediction of an injury free season for Colaiacovo, but I guess I should have known better.

Jonathan Ericsson stepped on a puck in practice on Sunday which sent him crashing into the boards injuring his shoulder as well. He was a gametime decision for the Blue Jackets game and ended up no being able to play. It is unknown whether Ericsson will be back for the home opener against the Dallas Stars today, but the Red Wings certainly need him back fast after the loss of Colaiacovo.

Jan Mursak will be out a few weeks with his shoulder/collarbone injury.

Power forward Todd Bertuzzi was cleared of having Mono after more blood work was done, showing he only had the flu.  He will be back with the team for the Friday game if he is ready in time.

Darren Helm is still recovering from his back injury and should be ready to return on Friday as well.

Jakub Kindl and Jonas Gustavsson continue to nurse their groin injuries and will both miss the home opener against the Dallas Stars.

If Jonathan Ericsson is not able to play against Dallas expect Detroit to call up another defencemen to take the spot. The best option would be for the Red Wings to sign Chad Billins to a two-way deal and bring up the Griffins’ star defenceman who has 20 points in his rookie season, but more than likely it will be Adam Almquist getting the call. Almquist has not played particularly well in Grand Rapids despite his stats and he has made countless mistakes in turnovers and positioning, but Almquist is currently on a two-day deal with the Red Wings. For the Red Wings t call-up Billins, they would have to sign him to a two-way contract and trade away a prospect to get under the 50-man roster limit.

Hopefully Ericsson will be back though and no one will need to be called up. Ericsson is a vital part of out defence this season and needs to stay healthy.

Update: Detroit looking to bring in a veteran defenceman by tonight’s game in case Ericsson cannot play.

Update: Samuelsson out with groin injury. Gustav Nyquist has been called up to the Red Wings!
