What the (Martin) Frk is Going On?

Martin Frk was the Detroit Red Wings 2nd round (49th overall) pick  in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. After being drafted hockey analysts were talking about how the Red Wings had gotten a steal  because he is considered to posses first round talent. His past two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads were a great indicator that he has the talent to to contend for a spot in the NHL. If Frk not gotten injured last season, he might have been selected before Detroit’s pick in the second round.

So far this season, though, he has shown some very concerning attributes. In his first six games he has 4 points (2 goals 2 assists) and 16 penalty minutes, which doesn’t count match penalties. Five of the penalty minutes coming on Oct. 6th because of a slew-foot penalty, for which he was ejected from the game. Those 16 penalty minutes don’t include the spear he gave to the face of a Cape Breton Screaming Eagle in the preseason, which earned him a 7 minute penalty. This will be his second suspension of the year already. He missed the first game of the season because of the spear and will miss the Mooseheads’ next game because a match penalty carries a mandatory one game suspension.

This is a very concerning pattern for not only Frk, but for the Wings as well. He was drafted and is signed to a Red Wings contract, so he soon could be a problem the Red Wings will have to deal with personally. The Wings will need to keep a close eye on him and hope the talent he possess does not go to waste because of a lack of discipline. To fix this the Halifax coach either has to work him hard over the next couple of days to show him these kinds of actions are not allowed or sit down with him to find out what is going on and help him work through it. As of now, though, I am not only disappointed, but disgusted in a player in which I have very high hopes.

Is Frk coming unglued? Is this how he always was, but no one really knew because he didn’t get the same attention before that he does now? Is he frustrated because his injury isn’t fully healed? Does he think he can just get away with these things? I see too many questions and no answers.

I hope he is able to turn things around, but all I have seen so far is a pattern of destruction. Destruction that is not only hurting the opposing players around him, but Frk himself.

Hmm well dude don’t worry too much til you come watch the Q league here in the Maritimes! The guy who was speared in the face is a dirtbag and probably deserved it. He is the type of player to poke and hack, slash punch etc but only those guys who cant beat the crap out of him! as for the slewfoot it happened 50 feet in front of me and myself and all who sit around me agree it was a trip with the stick not a foot. With a slewfoot the guy who falls does not get up with in 5 seconds it hurts way to much. Also with the refs in that game any calls were suspect just ask Jonathan Druoin who recieved a hit to head and was injured but no call. Or ask Luca Ciampini who recieved a goaltender inerference penalty from the back ref (who was at least 100′ away and could not see the play properly at all) while Mario Maillet was 10 feet from the play and was only calling a penalty on the d-man who viciously crosschecked Ciampini into the goalie. This is waht Frk deals with every game in the Maritimes regardless of the opponent.
