The Detroit Redwings have made the playoffs for 21 straight seasons. Out of those, they have made the Stanley Cup Finals 6 times. They have won 4 Stanley Cups in those 6. Ken Holland has been the general manager of the Wings since 1997. Prior to that he was an assistant general manager. He knows what he’s doing. Of those 4 Stanley Cup championships, 3 have come under the watch of Holland. They are complimented by 4 President’s Trophies, and 10 Division Titles since Holland took over. The Redwings have the longest active playoff streak in North American professional sports history.
So if Holland is this mind blowing, team running genius, what in the world is he smoking in this offseason? That is what many people are asking as he’s come under fire for being pretty idle this summer. What they need to realize is that it’s only July and there is still $13 Million in cap space available. Just because the big named signings haven’t happened, doesn’t mean that he isn’t in control. He’s got a plan.
Passed up big names have been Shea Weber, Zach Parise, Ryan Suter, Rick Nash, and Alexander Semin. Let’s get Shane Doan out of the way. He’s asking way too much and the locker room isn’t big enough for his ego. Alexander Semin would have been awesome skating along side Pavel Datsyuk, but it just wasn’t meant to happen. He’s got too much of a love for the penalty box anyway. They need guys to actually be on the ice. Shea Weber is too much of a risk with his temper. Ken Holland was reported to have spoken with Zach Parise. He was also reported to have offered Suter a ridiculous 13 year, $90 Million contract and a ‘generous’ offer to Nash. I’m not sure if I believe the 13 year one, but that is the rumor.
Nicklas Lidstrom retired after spending his entire season with Detroit, but he will stay on as a scout. Defenseman Brad Stuart is now a San Jose Shark. Winger Jiri Hudler signed a 4 year, $16 Million contract with the Calgary Flames. He needs to add a star to fill some of this void. He has, however, signed Jonas Gustavsson as a backup goalie. Mikael Samuelsson was with Detroit from 2006-2009, and is returning this Fall. With his experience, the 35 year old Forward will be a great addition to a locker room who will be missing some key veterans. In 54 games last season with the Canucks and the Panthers, he scored 31 points. Jordin Tootoo is sitting on a 3 year, $5.7 Million contract.
It may seem that Ken Holland’s kicking his feet up or just not with it this offseason, but I assure you that he is far from burnt out. People can criticize him for, what they think, is not making the right moves all the want to. They don’t have 4 Stanley Cups under their belt.
