Dan Cleary: A Red Wings Target? (Literally)

We all know what Dan Cleary brings to the Wings when he’s healthy – pretty good all around play.  He doesn’t do anything exceptional but does everything pretty good.  It’s been noted that he’s a leader in the locker room and is well respected by his teammates.  It would not surprise me if he was the third alternate captain this season.  However, I have noticed throughout the years that Cleary has been injured frequently, and some have been of the “friendly fire” variety.  Is he a targeted man?  Let’s take a look at some videos:

Mikael Samuelsson’s shot vs Dan Cleary’s jaw

Obviously, this was not intentional, as everybody knows Samuelsson’s shot cannot be trusted to be accurate.  I blame this one on Cleary himself since he knew Sammy was shooting and in that case, you wear a college-style full face mask.  If Sammy takes the point on the second power play this season (the horror…), please take note to all players who are, well, on the team.

Brad Stuart’s shot vs Dan Cleary’s ankle

I do not think that this is an intentional shot since Cleary jumps at the last second.  However, we do not know for sure.  I’m leaning that maybe Cleary should have not gotten in the way of Stuart’s cannon.

Jiri Hudler’s shoulder vs Dan Cleary’s head

Again, I do not think that this was intentional.  I will say that this is the hardest that Hudler has ever hit someone, even though it was a blindside hit to the head that would have led him to a suspension.  But once, again, this was not intentional.

In conclusion, I no not think that Dan Cleary’s teammates are intentionally hurting him.  Also, if you thought this was a serious exercise, you need to learn about sarcasm and my writing style.  Except for Samuelsson.  I don’t screw around when it comes to Mikael Samuelsson.

In conclusion, Dan Cleary has had some bad luck when it comes to injuries in his career, especially ones from his own teammates.  Any other examples?  Let me know on the twitter (@KevinN37) and I’ll update the post.  I’ll leave you with Pav shooting the puck at Cleary:
