Mandatory Darren Helm Post

It’s common knowledge by now, but Darren Helm has signed a four year, $8.5 million contract, which averages to $2.125 million a season.  Links are fun.

I think this is a great signing.  I do feel that the price may be a little bit high, but nothing drastic.  I was hoping Helm would sign for 5 years at $2 million a season, so this is pretty close.  This can turn into a steal if Helm could begin, you know, scoring some breakaway goals.    Let’s take a look at Helm’s stats:

As you can see, Helm seems to be about a 30 point a year guy while playing the penalty kill as well as the role of really really fast skater.  If he sees consistent time on the third line, possibly with Bertuzzi, I could see his points going up, hopefully, to 40 or so.  I highly doubt Helm will ever be a power play guy, but that’s why the Wings pay guys like Pav, Hank, and Fil.

Let’s take a few minutes and watch some Darren Helm awesomeness, shall we?  Let’s start with his most important goal ever:

This hit was awesome but a penalty because the refs were being stupid-heads:

HOLY CRAP HE CAN SCORE ON A BREAKAWAY:

Last, but the best, his dominating penalty kill against the Craphawks:
