Confirmed: Crosby Returns Tomorrow

Update: Just came to my attention that Sid’s presser was the day of the Lokomotiv Tragedy. It was not rescheduled. This piece of info blew right by me.  Was very, very sad that day.  This piece of info is enough for me to rethink my position on this matter. Original post is below.

The “Crosby Debate” has gotten downright venomous and vitriolic over the past several seasons.

Outside of the Steel City, most fans seem to have a strong dislike of #87, for a variety of reasons.

Among Detroiters, the reasons are quite plain, the main two seeming to be: Crosby was instrumental in the nightmarish loss Detroit suffered at the hands of the Penguins in 2009, and his immaturity when stalling prior to the shaking of hands was insulting.

After a long and arduous road back from the uncertainty that a concussion brings, Crosby has been cleared to play against the Islanders tomorrow night.

While I do have some issues with “The Kid”, the snubbing of our captain when the time to honor opponents came being my biggest, I still would consider myself a Crosby fan, and I am more than pleased that he is set to rejoin his squad in play.

Crosby is simply a blast to watch.  That’s really all it comes down to. And, one of my goals is to accelerate the popularization of hockey in the United States.  I realize I am not in a position to have any significant influence in this matter, at least not yet, but what I can I do.

Point being, Crosby is one of the finest weapons we have as hockey people, in terms of promotion.

Now, let’s address the enormous amount of Crosby hate out there, and how misguided I think it is.

First of all, “Cindy Crosby” is one of the laziest nicknames designed to insult a player I have ever heard.  Since when does complaining to a ref about a missed call make a player or a fan an unjustified whiner? Refs blow calls, and games, on a regular basis.  If a blinded Ice-Zebra misses something, they should be told so in no uncertain terms.  Plus, when seeing the cheap shots Crosby gets dealt away from the play, one wonders why he doesn’t complain MORE.

It seems that these days, people want stars to fall as much, if not more so, than they want them to shine.  This could be some kind of societal disorder, but that is for another blog.

I will admit, that I liked Crosby much more when he first came into the league, as opposed to now.  His youthful enthusiasm was far more endearing than the stoicism he currently displays.

So, I’ll contend that if you truly care about the good of the game, then Crosby’s success should also concern you.  Has there been another player in recent memory who has been as marketable as Crosby?

Perhaps Ovechkin has.  I’m not sure. And Datsyuk certainly could be if more casual fans paid attention to him.

“The Kid” has an on ice awareness that matches and/or exceeds anyone who has ever put on skates.  He is a textbook example of a prodigy.

So, we can hate him when he gets the better of our team.

But that is where the hatred should stop.

I’m sure much more will be said on this in the coming weeks.

As always….Go Wings.
