I wrote a piece I made a post over at The Sin Bin Chronicles calling on the readers to be the judge. Would they prefer their players to look like Darren Helm or Alex Ovechkin fitness wise.
It is a little over a year later and now I think it is time to do it again… so lets have at it! Does fitness matter?
Would you prefer the players on your team look like the following:
Here is a shot of Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin sporting the goods – complete with tramp stamp.
Would you prefer the physicality of third line speed skater for the Red Wings Darren Helm – complete with Todd Bertuzzi tattoos from Halloween.
Much is to be said that with 30 teams there would be thirty different expectations for the fitness of your players; but shouldn’t your Captain set the standard?
I’ll still take that 41 year-old defenseman any day.
In all honesty of course fitness matters. We are talking about professional athletes and they are paid the big bucks (in many cases millions a year) for them to be fit and enjoy a life of playing what when you get down to basics is still “just a game” for a living.
For all your fans paying, for the ownership and the management team, your teammates and yourself you owe it to be in shape, be fit, and be able to go come puck drop.
