So, The Red Wings have completed their 4 game sweep of the Phoenix Jets. Hell yeah! But now is not the time to get over confident. We still have a long way to go, 4 wins are in the bag but we still need 12 more. It’s a long road but i think out of The teams in the West, The Red Wings, more than any other, have what it takes to get this thing done. Detroit should be all healthy and rested up by the time The other teams get around to winning their series’.
Lets look at some of the top performers in this first playoff series:
-Pavel Datsyuk- My pick for the top performer from the Red Wings in this series. He took the Coyotes to stick-handling school every game. His 2 goals, 6 assists and +6 leads the team in goals, points, assists, and +/-! Datcyuk will continue to be crucial in our push through the 2nd round.
-Darren Helm- Proving more and more every game, every period, how much he is becoming an “elite” player, and how intrugal a part of this team he is. his 1 goal and 2 assists through the first series do not look over impressive, however this is coming from the 4th line. Helm continues to help the Red Wings show that they have the best grinding 4th line in the league.
-Valtteri Filppula- Finally! Val has been an average player pretty much his entire career, with little flares of greatness. However, every one in the Front office and most Detroit fans know, Filppula has greatness inside of him. Everytime you see a little spark of it you know it is there. This series was one of those times. Valtteri came out of this 4 game series with 1 goal and 5 points, he is also tied for assists with Datsyuk. Count it as a win if your tied with Datsyuk in anything.
-Jimmy howard- No one on the ice holds the fate of the game in his hand more than the goalie. Shooters can have an off night and depth players can still pick up the goals. Defenseman can miss breaking up a couple of odd mans, and they still have that last line of defense between the pipes. However, Goalies are not allowed to have off nights. A goalie off night means a loss. Jimmy Howard didnt have an off night in this series. He stood on his head and gave the guys a chance to win. He had a .915 SV% and a 2.50 GAA. Jimmy definitely has what it takes to get us to the end, he cant win the game but he can give the Wings an opportunity.
So as we go into the 2nd round, all rested and healthy here are my predictions:
-It looks like we are either going to be going up against San Jose or Nashville, with a long shot for the Ducks or Chicago. That is purely speculation but it is what i see. I really dont want to face San Jose in the 2nd, too much like last year. However, we wont be facing San Jose after a 7 game series with Phoenix. So if it’s Nashville im saying Wings in 5, if its Ducks/Chicago Its Wings in 6, If San Jose Wings in 7.
-With a fully Healthy roster these are the lines i wou;ld love to see:
These are the lines Detroit skated in the beginning of the season and we came on like fire. And… ive been wanting to see the return of the Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom line. How do you feel about these lines? Do you have some better combinations? Let us know, and get ready for round two!
