The Wings had just killed off a HUGE Dallas powerplay, when all of a sudden normally rock solid all-pro defenseman Brian Rafalski turned the puck over in the defensive zone. Jamie Benn of the Stars then quickly zipped a pass in front of goaltender Chris Osgood–which was subsequently finished off with a nice backhand by Stars captain Brenden Morrow.
So here we were knotted at 3-3 heading into overtime.
With less than a minute to go, the Wings went too far into the offensive zone, a bad rebound off of Dallas goalie Andrew Raycroft sealed Detroit’s faith. Their overaggressive attack gave Dallas a 3-2 (basically a 3-1 actually) heading the other way.
Loui Eriksson looked off 2 teammates as he took the shot himself from the right of Chris Osgood.
As the puck hit the back of the net, reality set in–tonight would not be Chris Osgood’s 400th win as the Stars escaped the Joe with a 4-3 win in overtime.
A great game, and an epic battle–could it be a new rivalry developing between the 1st ranked Wings and the 2nd ranked Stars? It appears to be, as both games this season have been breath-holdingly close…sadly ending with Stars victories both times.
Also, forward Danny Cleary failed to notch as point on his birthday, including a missed chance as an odd puck bounce cost him an easy tap-in in front of a wide open Stars net.
Not every game goes your way, all we can do is continue to enjoy 1st place and work hard to make sure we pick up that extra point next time around.
Next game is Wednesday at 7:30 against the 3rd ranked Vancouver Canucks–should be a good one.
